Genevieve has made horses a priority in her life for over 25 years. Starting in her youth, Genevieve competed successfully in Saddleseat Equitation (Saddlebreds, Morgans and Arabians), Short Stirrup to Pre-Childrens Hunters and eventually Dressage and Eventing through Training Level. Throughout the years, Genevieve has been exposed to many different instructors, training styles, riding disciplines, breeds and backgrounds. These diverse experiences have helped Genevieve to build a secure and open minded training philosophy.
"What I love most about this sport is the challenge. It is constantly evolving and asking me to learn and grow. Every ride teaches me something new. Every lesson offers inspiration. It ignites a passion in me like nothing else."
Her interest in making a career in horses began young. By age 14, Genevieve was running summer camp programs, teaching lessons and assisting in the breaking and training of young horses through the guidance of other professionals.
An opportunity to manage a 25 stall boarding facility and large lesson program was too good for Genevieve to pass up at age 18. In addition to managing and caring for the 25 horses and teaching up to 60 lessons per week, Genevieve also began to establish a client base and reputation for training on her own.
Veterinary medicine was always of interest to Genevieve. So when she was offered a job as a veterinary technician for a mobile equine practice, she jumped right in. This position quickly morphed into a full time Practice Manager position. She spent four years working for Triangle Equine Mobile Veterinary Services (Cary, NC) before deciding to explore more avenues in veterinary medicine and gain experience in a new setting. Dogwood Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort in Chapel Hill, NC hired Genevieve as the Hospital Manager where she gained extensive experience in business management, marketing, human resources, and small animal medicine over a four year period.
Genevieve continues to work for Dr. Sally Vivrette at Triangle Equine part time as a veterinary technician, assisting the veterinarian through routine procedures, prepurchase exams, dentistry and lameness/moving evaluations.
In 2016, Genevieve joined the wonderful group of folks at the North Carolina Therapeutic Riding Center in Mebane, NC as the interum Equine Manager and became a PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor in June 2017.
Genevieve owns two horses, now both retired from competition. She purchased her leopard appaloosa gelding, Willie, when he was a three year old and brought him along through the levels herself. She later bought Finn (who she had been riding since he was 5-6). Finn wasn't ever a straightforward horse. Through the years with Finn, Genevieve gained a lot of first-hand experience dealing with difficult behavioral problems and rehabilitating from injury. She is now particularly passionate about fitness, maintenance and rehabilitation in horses.
Though Genevieve is without a competition horse currently, she is often campaigning horses for clients and regularly competes and takes lessons.
"I love riding client's horses, and really love when I can compete them or take a lesson on them. It gives me a greater understanding of what the rider is going through and how the horse is feeling. But ultimately, as much as I enjoy it, it's the horse owners who want to be bringing the horses along. I really encourage their full participation (and credit) in the process!"
Genevieve has a unique approach to teaching and training. By keeping a small program, she can invest fully in the goals of the rider and get to know the horse inside and out. Her focus is on getting the horse and rider working together to achieve their training goals with support through lessons, training rides and an individualized plan for maintenance and fitness. In addition to the fitness of the horse, she takes into consideration the fitness and biomechanics of the rider in order to help unlock their effectiveness and maximize their riding ability. Fitness and physical ability isn't everything, though. Genevieve is a compassionate and perceptive teacher. She will assess the communication style, lifestyle and learning style of each rider and adapt a way of teaching to meet the rider's needs and help them work through their riding roadblocks to get them back on the road to success. Being a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and teaching children and adults with both cognitive and physical disabilities has helped Genevieve's teaching style develop. She has grown her skills and experience in communicating, understanding and making creative lessons plans to fit each individual.
"Genevieve is a hard working, kind, knowledgeable, skilled horsewoman who has provided me and my mare with invaluable help! She is always happy to answer my questions whether about horse care, riding, or anything in between. Genevieve is flexible in scheduling lessons with me which is great since I am a working college student. Through all my work with her I really get the feeling that she wants what is best for both me and my horse. I trust Genevieve's knowledge and skill tremendously and I know that she very works hard to provide all her services from lessons to training rides to boarding at affordable rates. I am forever grateful for the progress and fun that Genevieve has helped me to have with my horse and I am excited to continue for as long as she is willing! "

"Genevieve Andrews is an exceptionally perceptive professional who works with each horse and rider pair as an individual team. I believe that Genevieve’s dedication to constant self-improvement through her own education sets her apart from others in the horse training and coaching industry. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to her for helping me to create an extraordinary bond with my horse, Duke. Duke is an incredibly special horse who came to me with a lot of baggage and trust issues, to say the least. Over the course of a year, Genevieve worked with Duke and me in a systematic manner which allowed us to progress our partnership both under saddle and on the ground. Duke and I went from never having competed together, to moving confidently and successfully through Training level dressage and Maiden eventing. After a complicated orthopedic injury tragically ended Duke’s competition career prematurely, Genevieve stood by my side every step of the way during the treatment and rehabilitation processes. Numerous trips to the NCSU Veterinary school allowed for ample discussion time, and Genevieve was our biggest cheerleader (and my biggest mentor) during this difficult time. The level of care that both Duke and I have received at Epona is immeasurable, and for that I will be forever grateful. At Epona, no step is skipped on the path to greatness. "Genevieve has been working with my off-the-track thoroughbred through lessons and training for the last 18 months. During this short time she has taken him from a horse that would have a meltdown over crossing a ground pole to a horse that can confidently navigate a two foot jumper course. She developed a training plan customized to his needs and my needs as a rider. Every week included a summary of any concerns or issues we'd encountered during the week and troubleshooting tips as well as 'homework' for the coming week to build both of our skill and fitness between lessons. I truly believe she cares about our progress and relationship and her enthusiasm for training is obvious. There have been times during the past year when I struggled with my gelding's behavioral issues and she was there for practical advice and moral support the entire way. When he was in training, she took the time out to send emails detailing his progress and her thoughts as well as pictures.
Genevieve constantly goes above and beyond the call of duty to set up activities outside of lessons. Regular cross country training sessions and frequent horse shows have made training with Epona fun! She is very active in the show community and flexible with what her clients would like to do. After every event, videos and photos are posted on the website which is fun to see but also a useful learning tool! Looking forward to many more events with Epona Equine!"

"I cannot express the degree of gratitude I have for the help I have received from Genevieve, spanning over a couple of years, in the rehab of my beloved gelding Trouvere. "Tru" had kissing spine disease, and then a badly injured suspensory; after failing PRP he then had surgery, and two 6 month periods of stall rest along the way. She helped me get him back under saddle and into a regular exercise program, with just the right combination of kindness and authority (he can be....ummmm...opinionated!). He is not an easy horse, and Genevieve was GREAT with him! She is an excellent rider with a great feel for what approach will work with the individual. She has a knack for developing a relationship of trust and leadership with horses; Genevieve is also keenly observant of any lameness, swelling, or other health issues and offers excellent ideas, including when to call the vet. She was always honest and reliable, and without her help I would not have been able to make the progress we made on my own. Thank you, Genevieve!"

I have been working with Genevieve Andrews for the past 6 months. I have a 4 year old OTTB mare named Bisou and was in a little over my head with her training. Genevieve was, to my good fortune, a boarder/trainer at my barn. When she saw me frustrated and struggling, she offered to help me- first offering her services out on a trial basis to make sure we were all a good fit. That impressed me very much. Genevieve is not about making money, but instead truly cares about her clients (the horses!) and their owners. Her one-on-one lessons are focused and full of constant and useful feedback for the horse and rider. I immediately noticed a difference in my horse and my own riding and by the 4th lesson was completely in awe of Genevieve’s knowledge (especially her dressage-based teachings), her compassion and her professionalism. Genevieve is always on time and ready with a plan for the lesson. Outside of the ring, Genevieve is also very helpful and encouraging. She is constantly sending me emails about exercises I can try to improve different aspects of Bisou’s fitness and flexibility. She has also done some training rides on Bisou for me and is always prompt with a phone call to let me know every detail of her ride. Genevieve encouraged me to write a journal about my progress with Bisou and I have found this very helpful as well. I highly recommend Genevieve Andrews as a trainer- she will make a difference in you and your horse!

"I have so enjoyed my lessons with Genevieve! As an adult rider interested in riding for pleasure, I have been delighted with Genevieve's approach to my goal of becoming a more balanced, confident rider. Genevieve puts a lot of thought into the activities for my lesson, and I love that in each lesson I feel very safe and comfortable but at the same time challenged to improve my riding. I am definitely a more confident rider because of Genevieve's approach to training. She is patient, always willing to explain and demonstrate a new skill and is very encouraging. I'm a better rider because of her."

"As an adult rider who rode as a teenager it is great to have Genevieve at Epona to teach me and my horse how to jump. We have enjoyed her individualized instruction and are even competing (and placing well) in our first few shows. I highly recommend Genevieve for learning how to jump as well as communication with your horse overall." Kate Heim (Durham NC)
"I sent Genevieve my 4 year old OTTB after he returned from 30 days re-backing so that he could start learning the basics in order to be sold. She started him with an easy hand and quiet confidence that gave him the foundation he needed for his new life. After only 2 months with her, he was sold as a hunter prospect and is now a 3' children's hunter. Thank you, Genevieve!"
Kate Bremser, DVM (Bahama, NC)
"I have an eight year old mare who was switching to English pleasure and learning to jump after being ridden and shown Western pleasure for her first 7 years. I am learning too, and began to experience some difficulties so I asked Genevieve to work with us. She got both of our problems figured out and worked with us together to get things going smoothly for us---all this in a couple weeks time. It was one of the smartest things I've done since buying a horse. She has a great sense of humor, solid knowledge, and easy way with both horses and people. I am so much happier with my mare after getting her help!"

"Epona Equine Services helped me to reignite my passion for horses in a way that no other instructor has been able to do. After several life changes that left me little time to ride for a few years, I asked Genevieve to give me a few lessons for a tune-up. My former hunter pasture pony who had not been ridden regularly blossomed under her instruction! Together we were able to prepare him for our first show in years and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. My horse can be difficult and moody, so he requires patience, understanding, and firm but friendly aids. Genevieve worked to understand his moods and my anxiety about riding to help us overcome our roadblocks to getting back in shape. I could not be happier with the results! We went from basic trot work to re-learning leg and hand aids to simple dressage tests to canter poles and all the way back to jumping over the course of a few months. I was amazed at what Genevieve could do to start with the basics and move me up at the right pace for me AND my horse. I think that sometimes we get so caught up in the worries of life that we forget to put the time and effort into the things that make us the happiest. I just needed Genevieve's expertise and instruction to overcome my issues and help me communicate with my horse in a language he would understand to become a more confident rider so I could enjoy riding again. She has inspired and empowered me to get back into riding and continues to provide me opportunities to learn and grow as a rider and horsewoman as often as possible. I see a bright future for Cody and myself and am so happy to be learning new things with every ride. Thank you so much for everything, Epona Equine Services! "

"Genevieve Andrews is an inspirational teacher, a compassionate colleague, a caring horse provider, and a dedicated, committed professional. My daughter has ridden with her as her student, worked beside her in the barn, and showed her horse for her in schooling shows--and Gen has always been a cheerful, optimistic, spirited, and kind professional. A terrific person with whom to work!"
I have always loved horses and riding, but unfortunately did not have the opportunity to ride much growing up. I met Genevieve through a mutual friend and got to know her as she started attending fitness classes that I teach. When my husband suggested that I should start riding lessons with her, I was thrilled! Genevieve is extremely knowledgeable about horses and riding. As one of her newer students, I have already learned so much in just a couple of months! She is attentive to and helpful with my form while riding and effectively teaches me how to communicate with the horse in a way that he understands. I wouldn't trade my riding lessons with Genevieve for anything in the world! Not only is it a great workout, I learn a lot and leave my lesson feeling rejuvenated. Love love love Epona Equine!!
